Passage VI

Tanis delta quiet

10 min · July 2026

Tanis — biblical Zoan — is delta archaeology in open air: royal tombs discovered intact, silver coffins since moved, but the site remains a passage into Third Intermediate Period politics few tourists reach.

Low mounds and partial columns dot fields. Mud brick melts back into soil — imagination required. Guides or pre-reading help; signage is thinner than Luxor.

Why come

Silence and ownership of sightlines. You may walk alone among sarcophagus pits covered for protection — respect barriers. Delta humidity differs from upper Egypt dryness; dress accordingly.

Logistics

Day trip from Cairo or Alexandria — not en-route to Luxor; intentional detour passage.
